Mercury Technologies Ltd. has been appointed by Dawn Meats to review the potential opportunities for reclaiming waste energy from the ammonia refrigeration systems at a number of sites across Ireland. Five facilities have been surveyed, with three earmarked for immediate attention. Liquid injection cooled compressors will be converted to water cooled, thus providing a medium through which to harness the abundant waste heat in the compressor oil circuit. Desuperheaters will be installed in main discharge piping and air compressors will be replaced with newer models featuring energy-recovery coils. The water will be used in a variety of ways, including direct feed of 60C+ water to smaller users and maintenance of warm water supply tanks at 40C+ It is expected that payback periods will be as short as 1 year or less in some cases.
